Many dilapidated motorway bridges have to be renovated – not only in Berlin. To make more speed, the Greens propose a construction break for new highways.

The outgoing federal government has missed its original target brand in the renovation of a dilapidated motorway bridges. At least her clearly slimmed down planning from last summer was largely implemented, as the government’s answer to a question from Greens MP Julia Verlinden shows. According to this, 212 modernized bridge partial structures nationwide were completed in 2024.

Ambitious plan of 2022

According to a program presented in 2022, 4,000 of a total of 28,000 motorway bridges should be renewed primarily. The specific goal: 400 bridges should be renovated each year. “Autobahn GmbH of the federal government is aiming to significantly increase the number of necessary plans, so that significantly more buildings can be modernized in the next few years,” the Federal Ministry of Transport now writes in its response to Verlinden, which is available to the German Press Agency. However, this requires adequate financing.

In August 2024, the Federal Government announced in a response to a request from the Union faction that, as part of the bridge modernization, contracts were currently concluded for around 347 bridge part buildings in order to modernize bridges through replacement new construction, partial renewal or reinforcement. It is partly about orders that take longer than a year. Overall, it is planned to complete around 213 part of the bridge in the current year or to hand over traffic.

Green politician: No new motorways

The current figures from the Ministry of Transport are “a clear work order for the upcoming federal government,” said Verlinden. In the household and the design of the special fund infrastructure, renovation and maintenance would have to be prioritized. At least until the renovation goal has been reached, all plans and construction organizations for new motor construction projects should be put on hold.

The Ringbahnbrücke on the A100 in the west of Berlin was closed at short notice in mid -March due to a spreading crack in the structure. S-Bahn traffic under the bridge was also discontinued. The bridge should be rebuilt. “The collapsed carol bridge in Dresden and the blocking of the A100 bridge in Berlin have impressively showed what happens when important renovation work is being kidnapped,” said Verlinden.
