US President Donald Trump stated in an interview that China’s head of state Xi Jinping would have called him for tariffs because of the dispute. Beijing now rejected the claim.
The government in Beijing rejected US President Donald Trump’s statements about a phone call with the Chinese head of state XI Jinping. “As far as I know, there has been no telephone conversation between the two heads of state lately,” said the spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Guo Jiakun, on Monday in Beijing. There are currently no negotiations on customs issues between China and the USA.
Trump reported a phone call with XI last week. “He called,” said Trump, according to an interview published on Friday with the “Time” magazine. “I don’t think that’s a sign of weakness on his part.”
China countered Trump’s tariffs with countermeasures
When leaving the White House, Trump said to the question of reporters whether XI called him after announcing the US tariffs in early April or before: “I don’t want to comment on it, but I often spoke to him.” The Chinese government had denied on Thursday that there are already trade talks between Beijing and Washington.
