Christiane Schenderlein takes over the newly created office of Minister of State for Sport. The CDU politician has set a steep climb in recent years.

The Union has presented its line-up for the upcoming black and red federal government: Christiane Schenderlein is planned for the office of Minister of State for Sport and Volunteering. So far, the 43-year-old CDU politician has only been a term.

Schenderlein thus occupies a newly created position, so far the sport was located in the Ministry of the Interior. She is currently a spokeswoman for the CDU/CSU parliamentary group and belongs to the Committee on Culture and Media. Schenderlein has been in parliament since the past legislative period.

Since 2021 in the Bundestag

The mother of three comes from Saxony and initially worked for various members of the Bundestag and state parliament as an office manager. She also worked as a communication consultant.

Politically, she has had a steep career in recent years. Schenderlein joined the CDU at the age of 16. But it was only in 2019 that she became a district councilor in northern Saxony, in the same year she moved into the Saxon state parliament and was elected to the CDU state board.

In 2021 she competed in the Bundestag election, but missed the direct mandate in the Northern Saxony constituency. Schenderlein still secured a place in the Bundestag via the state list. There she names culture and media, inner and home as well as tourism as its focus. At the coalition negotiations, Schenderlein headed the cultural and media working group.

Big expectations for Christiane Schenderlein

Now the 43-year-old is being promoted to the Chancellery, where the State Ministry of Sports and Volunteering is located. The expectations are great, the German Olympic Sports Confederation hopes for “a lawyer within the federal government”. The German Football Association also called for “a voice for sport”. Central topics for Schenderlein are likely to be the future of top sports funding and a German Olympic application.

“I would like to shape instead of managing and actively influence the future of my home and the future of our country,” says the CDU politician on her website about her motivation. Schenderlein is a fan of RB Leipzig, likes to read historical novels, drinks two liters of coffee a day and describes herself as a “early bird” on her Instagram profile: it stands up every day at 5.30 a.m.
