Parliamentary election in Canada: Head-to-head race expected-Trump threatens

Head-to-head race
Trump’s annex threats overshade parliamentary choice in Canada

Canada chooses a new parliament under the pressure of Donald Trump. The liberals around Prime Minister Carney are ahead-probably thanks to the threats of the US president.

Against the background of an annexation threatened by US President Donald Trump, the people in Canada chose a new parliament on Monday.

Prime Minister Mark Carney with his liberal party was the favorite. Shortly after the opening of the polling station, Trump again spoke of Canada as 51st US state. The conservative candidate Pierre Poilievre then asked the US President to stay out of the election.

A head-to-head race between the liberals of Prime Minister Mark Carney and the Conservatives from Pierre Poilievre is expected. According to several surveys from the weekend, the ruling liberals come to 42 to 44 percent, conservatives to 38 to 40 percent. The new Democratic Party ends up in third place in surveys with around seven percent. At the time of the handover of Trudeau on Carney, surveys had predicted a defeat to the Liberals in the next election.

However, if the forecasts come true, the liberals probably received the fourth mandate in a row. However, it could happen that Carney only gives a minority of the seats in the 343 seats and would therefore be dependent on smaller parties for government formation.

The Annexion threats from Trump and his customs policy had recently united the Canadians in deep rejection and triggered a real patriotic wave – and according to the campaign race, according to the Liberal Prime Minister Mark Carney, who is more likely to be considered his conservative challenger Pierre Poilievre, to offer Trump’s forehead.

To this evening (local time), around 29 million voters in Canada are called for voting for voting in the parliamentary election. The first results are expected on Tuesday night (CEST). Since the polling stations close due to the time shift within Canada at different times, the election results are also gradually announced.

Parliamentary election under pressure from US President Trump

Shortly after the start of the parliamentary election in Canada, US President Donald Trump again asked the country to integrate the United States. “No more artificial line pulled many years ago. How beautiful would this country be. Free access without limits. Only positive, nothing negative. It should always be!” Wrote Trump on his online platform Truth Social.

He asked the people of Canada to choose the man who has “strength and wisdom”, among other things, to halve their taxes and increase their military power – that is, “when Canada becomes the estimated 51st state of the United States”.

The United States could no longer subsidize Canada if Canada did not become a state of its country, Trump wrote, who of course is not on the ballot in the parliamentary election in Canada. Economic experts on both sides of the border have repeatedly emphasized that even if Canada has historically benefited from the United States as a neighbor, the USA Canada does not subsidize in the traditional sense.

Poilievre then condemned the Washington interference. “President Trump, stay out of our choice,” said the opposition candidate in online service X to Trump. “Canada will always be proud, confident and independent and we will never be the 51st state.”

Shortly before the election, Canada was shaken by a car attack in Vancouver, in which eleven people were killed. A driver raced into a crowd on Saturday evening at a street festival of the Filipino Community in the Western Canadian city. The 30-year-old driver overwhelmed the bystanders, then he was arrested by police officers.

The public prosecutor charges the suspect multiple murder. The officials do not assume a terrorist motive and said that the arrested driver had suffered from psychological problems in the past.
