Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock on her inaugural tour of the Middle East: the Greens politician is now in Jordan. The country is one of the most important host countries for refugees in the region.
Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock visited a refugee settlement in Jordan on Friday. The Talbieh camp, set up in 1968 by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Middle East (UNRWA), is supported with German funds.
The Greens politician then wanted to meet Foreign Minister Aiman al-Safadi in the Jordanian capital Amman. Further political talks in Egypt are on her agenda on Saturday. Egypt will host the world climate conference in November.
Jordan is one of the main host countries for refugees in the region. According to the federal government, there are more than 670,000 Syrian refugees registered with the UN refugee agency UNHCR and tens of thousands of refugees mainly from Iraq, Yemen and Sudan. According to this, around 80 percent of Syrian refugees live in urban areas, around 20 percent in camps. According to this information, the federal government has paid around 977 million euros for humanitarian aid in the context of the Syrian crisis since 2012, of which around 135 million euros last year.
According to the UN, the Talbieh refugee camp was built for Palestinian refugees and others displaced during the 1967 Six-Day War. Jordan’s neighbor Israel had conquered the Gaza Strip, the West Bank and East Jerusalem in 1967, among other things. The camp is around 35 kilometers south of the capital Amman. According to the Federal Foreign Office, around 9,500 people currently live in the camp, which was originally built for 5,000 refugees.
