Arrested after US naturalization test – student again

He wanted to become a US citizen – and was put into prison right after his test. The US government is a thorn in the eye that the student has co-organized propalestinic protests.

A student at Columbia University in New York, who was arrested immediately after his naturalization test, is again at large again. A judge concluded in a hearing that with the approximately two-week detention “of a person who is not charged with any crime was previously caused great damage,” reported the US broadcaster NPR, among other things. The student was one of the organizers of the Propalestinian protests at Columbia University last year. His case is now being negotiated.

Mohsen Mahdawi, born in West Bank, had a GreenCard, i.e. an unlimited residence permit in the United States, and was Vermont for the naturalization test in the northern state.

“If someone stands for violence, glorify and support terrorists who are happy to kill Americans and molested Jews, one should withdraw this privilege to the person and not stay in this country,” the Ministry of Homeland protection also said with a view to the Greencard after the hearing.

The left Senator Bernie Sanders from Vermont, on the other hand, welcomed Mahdawi’s release. His detention by the government of US President Donald Trump was “illegal”. “In America, one should not end up in prison for expressing his opinion,” he wrote on the X.

The case is reminiscent of the activist Machmud Chalil, arrested several weeks ago. This was arrested in his apartment building in New York in March and brought to Louisiana from there to a prison. According to its lawyers, the graduate of New York Columbia University also has a GreenCard. He is married to a US citizen. His case has been causing a sensation in the United States for weeks.
