The United States and Iran negotiate an atomic agreement. The next round is a long time coming, now US President Trump wants to punish Iran’s oil customers. Among them: China.
US President Donald Trump massively increases the pressure on Tehran in the middle of the negotiations around Iran’s controversial nuclear program. The US government will now occupy all buyers of Iranian oil with sanctions, Trump explained on his Truth Social platform. Iran’s oil customers, be it people or countries, should no longer do business with the United States. China is considered the largest buyer of Iranian oil.
A few weeks after years of the ice age, the United States and Iran had recorded talks about a possible new nuclear agreement. At an appointment in the White House, Trump said that the new sanctions should help bring Iran into a situation in which Tehran was willing to enter into a deal.
New negotiating round moved with Iran
Today it became known that the next round of negotiations on the nuclear program between Washington and Tehran should be postponed. The fourth date, originally planned for Saturday in Rome, between the US specialist Steve Witkoff and Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghtschi would be postponed for “logistical reasons”, explained Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi on the platform X. The Oman conveyed in the talks.
According to the spokeswoman for the US State Department, Tammy Bruce, the United States assumes that there will be discussions again in the near future.
Object ports for Iran’s economy of great importance
Iran is already in a violent economic crisis – not least because of existing sanctions. If the US government with Trump’s new threat to sanctions should actually succeed in scare the remaining buyers of Iranian oil, this should be economically devastating for Iran.
It was only on Wednesday that the US Ministry of Finance imposed new sanctions against several companies in the United Arab Emirates, Turkey and Iran, which, according to Washington, are involved in the business of Iranian oil. Iran’s foreign office spokesman Ismail Baghai condemned the new punitive measures according to the state news agency IRNA Scharf and threatened consequences. It remained unclear whether the new sanctions are the real reason of shift.
The Iranian journalist Abas Aslani wrote on the platform X that “internal disagreements within the US government” and “changes to the framework conditions defined in previous rounds” were one of the reasons for the shift. According to the government -related web portal “Iran Nuances”, skepticism is growing in Tehran how seriously the United States meant the ongoing nuclear negotiations.
For years there has been a dispute over the Iranian nuclear program
In 2015, Iran agreed to restrict its nuclear program after long negotiations with contractual partners – including China, Russia, the USA, the USA, Germany and Great Britain. However, Trump unilaterally got out of the pact in 2018 and imposed new, hard sanctions. Then Tehran no longer adhered to the requirements of the agreement. Trump is now aiming for a new deal with the Islamic Republic and threatened to beat military strokes at the same time if there is no agreement.
With the postponement, a discussion of Iranian government members with representatives from Germany, France and Great Britain, which, according to Tehran, is said to have been scheduled for Friday.
