White smoke? Black smoke? Next week the whole world will look at the chimney in the Vatican. It starts on Wednesday.
The fireplace was set up on the Sistine chapel in the Vatican for the choice of the new Pope. The world -famous chimney was attached by firefighters on the roof of the chapel from the 15th century. The choice begins next Wednesday: If black smoke rises to the sky, the more than 130 cardinals in the conclave in the strictly shielded chapel are not yet in agreement. If there is a new pontiff, the chimney smokes white.
Sometimes, however, the color cannot be seen with certainty at first. In the meantime, chemicals are added to the burning list of the cardinals so that white or black can be seen more clearly. The chimney is connected to two ovens: a cast iron from 1939, which is used for the ballot papers, and a newer from 2005 for the chemicals.
New Pope needs two -thirds majority
When choosing the Pope Francis, who died on Easter Monday at the age of 88, it only took a day and a half until white smoke rose to the sky. When the time comes, it will soon be announced by the Mittelloggia of St. Peter’s Cathedral: Habemus Papam (we have a Pope), and the new Pontifex will be shown to the public for the first time. He needs a two -thirds majority for the choice. According to the current status, 133 cardinals will probably decide – more than ever.
