More money for defense and border security – clear cuts in the areas of foreign aid, environment and education. With its first draft budget, the Trump government sets accents.
President Donald Trump’s first draft budget for 2026 provides for massive cuts in many areas, but more money for the defense department and the Ministry of Homeland. The proposed cuts in the non-defense area amount to $ 163 billion (around 144 billion euros) or 22.6 percent compared to the previous year, the White House said. Overall, the plans now presented include a volume of $ 1.7 trillion (2025: $ 1.83 trillion).
The draft mainly provides information about Trump’s wishes for the upcoming household – but ultimately the congress decides. It will probably take months before a decision is located. The coming financial year begins in the USA on October 1st.
According to the White House, there should be drastic cuts in the areas of environment, foreign aid or education. In the environmental sector alone, $ 15 billion is to be reduced, with which “unreliable renewable energies” or projects for removing carbon dioxide from the air have been financed. These projects unnecessarily burdened only the taxpayer.
No funds for LGBT activism in Africa
In the area of foreign aid, an employee spoke of “enormous cuts” that it should only be provided by foreign aid where it was in the interests of the United States. “We will not finance Sesame Road in Iraq. We will not finance LGBT activism in Africa,” said one employee.
Closing of the Ministry of Education is being promoted
For the Ministry of Education, which is hardly functional after massive layoffs, cuts are also planned. “With the budget, the process of closing the Ministry of Education continues,” says the draft. Here, too, special programs shown as Woke are explicitly shortened, such as those that deal with racism.
More money for defense and home protection
According to the government, defense expenditure should increase by 13 percent without adjusting inflation, the funds for the Ministry of Homeland Security by almost 65 percent. The aim of this is to ensure that the authorities who defended the “invasion” at the border that had the necessary resources. In addition, investments to deter “Chinese aggression in the Indo-Pacific” should also be prioritized and to strengthen the US defense industry.
Criticism of the Democrats
The minority leader of the Democrats in the US Senate, Chuck Schumer, criticized that the draft was an attack on hard-working Americans. While Trump is cöhle health care, the educational system, he finances tax reliefs for billionaires and large companies.
