The AfD’s classification by the Protection of the Constitution initially affects the Federal Party. However, the topic should also play a role at the next interior ministers’ conference.
After the AfD was classified as secure right-wing extremist by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, possible consequences for AfD members in the civil service and state party financing are also debated. The Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) said the “Bild”: “We also have to check what consequences this classification must have for the activity of AfD members in the public service.” The decision of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution also gives “reason to check whether the AfD can be excluded on this basis by the state party financing”.
Hesse’s Interior Minister Roman Poseck (CDU) had already said on Friday: “We will also check to what extent the classification by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution has an impact on AfD members and officials in the public service.” Employees in the police and administration would have to offer the guarantee that they always stand up for our free democratic basic order. On this topic, the interior minister sees an across borders that are uniform. Therefore, he would make the topic the subject of the next interior ministerial conference in Bremerhaven in mid -June.
Withdrawal of state party financing?
Lower Saxony’s CDU boss Sebastian Lechner, like Herrmann, considers it necessary to take a look at AfD financing. “However, the Interior Ministers’ Conference should now carefully examine an application for withdrawal of party financing. I find it unbearable to finance right -wing extremists and anti -constitutional propaganda,” said Lechner on Friday.
A possible ban procedure is controversial among the inner ministers that could initiate the Bundestag, Federal Council and the Federal Government. Thuringia’s Interior Minister Georg Maier (SPD) said the “Bild”: “The initiation of a prohibition procedure is the logical consequence of this decision and must now be tackled consistently next.”
His Hamburg counterpart Andy Grote (SPD) said more reserved. He told the newspaper that the classification was secured for a possible ban procedure as secure right -wing extremist – if it is confirmed in court – a necessary but not sufficient prerequisite. The next step would have to be examined whether a prohibition procedure could be conducted with the very high chance of success.
