The AfD’s classification by the Protection of the Constitution initially affects the Federal Party. But the topic is also relevant for the federal states.
After the AfD was classified as secure right -wing extremist by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, the federal states debate the consequences. The topic is also to be discussed at the next Interior Ministers’ Conference of the countries, as a spokeswoman for the IMK chairman said. Bremen’s Senator Ulrich Mäurer (SPD) held the chair this year.
The conference is planned for June 11th to 13th, 2025 in Bremerhaven. There is a discussion about three things: possible consequences for AfD members in the civil service, state party financing and a possible AfD ban procedure.
Consequences for public service employees?
In terms of content, Mäurer did not want to comment on his coordinating role. But other country minister did that. The Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) said the “Bild”: “We also have to check what consequences this classification must have for the activity of AfD members in the public service.” The decision of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution also gives “reason to check whether the AfD can be excluded on this basis by the state party financing”.
Hesse’s Interior Minister Roman Poseck (CDU) had already said on Friday: “We will also check to what extent the classification by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution has an impact on AfD members and officials in the public service.” Employees in the police and administration would have to offer the guarantee that they always stand up for our free democratic basic order. On this topic, the interior minister sees an across borders that are uniform. Therefore, he would make the topic the subject of the next interior ministerial conference in Bremerhaven in mid -June.
AfD ban proceedings controversial
A possible ban procedure is controversial among the inner ministers that could initiate the Bundestag, Federal Council and the Federal Government. Thuringia’s Interior Minister Georg Maier (SPD) said the “Bild”: “The initiation of a prohibition procedure is the logical consequence of this decision and must now be tackled consistently next.”
His Hamburg counterpart Andy Grote (SPD) said more reserved. He told the newspaper that the classification was secured for a possible ban procedure as secure right -wing extremist – if it is confirmed in court – a necessary but not sufficient prerequisite. The next step would have to be examined whether a prohibition procedure could be conducted with the very high chance of success.
Possibly long legal proceedings on AfD classification
Berlin’s Justice Senator Felor Badenberg considers debates about an AfD ban. The CDU politician and former Vice President of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution on Deutschlandfunk said that they expect the party to act as secured by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution.
She pointed out that it could take years. If at some point the administrative and higher administrative court made decisions, this was the time for those responsible for thinking about thinking about it. “But this question does not arise at the moment,” emphasized Badenberg.
Constitutional protection as an early warning system
The CDU security politician Roderich Kiesewetter called for a determined procedure against members of the party who are employed in the public service. The protection of the constitution is an early warning system. “Therefore, the upgrade of the party could and should have an impact on civil servants and employees in the public service, because membership in the AfD is not compatible with it,” Kiesewetter told the “Handelsblatt”. State employees should protect the freedom-democratic basic order and society and do not contribute to the hollowing out democracy. “In individual cases, dismissal would have to be released,” said Kiesewetter.
The police union (GdP) called for a uniform approach. The chairman for the federal police area, Andreas Roßkopf, told the “Rheinische Post” (online), that would have to agree on that countries and the federal government. With regard to the federal police, the union chief emphasized: “So far, the Federal Ministry of the Interior and also from the leadership of the federal police have not yet been done.”
The state offices for the protection of the constitution in Thuringia, Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt had previously classified the respective AfD state associations as secure right-wing extremist endeavors. In several other federal states such as Brandenburg, the party is considered a right -wing suspicion. Several federal states had made it clear on Friday that the classification by the Federal Office had no immediate consequences for them, but the knowledge flowed into the observation of the constitutional protection offices there at the state level.
The alliance Sahra Wagenknecht complained after the classification of the AfD as secure right -wing extremist an “authoritarian renovation” of society. “The fact is that the parties of the self -proclaimed” democratic center “have been promoting an authoritarian renovation of our society for years, restricting free expression, fighting unpleasant political forces with undemocratic means and creating massive pressure to conformity,” said the party founder and federal chairwoman Wagenknecht. The executive Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser (SPD) has proven to be a fight for democracy.
