Does the EU and NATO country Romania remain on a democratic course? The course for this sets the repetition of the presidential election. The constitutional court had canceled the election of 2024.
After the presidential election was canceled in the EU and NATO country Romania last year, the repetition of this vote began. According to surveys, George Simion from the extreme right party Aur has the best prospects. However, it is unlikely that one of the eleven candidates will reach the absolute majority straight away, which is why on May 18 a runoff election between the two best -placed people in the first ballot should decide. The polling stations close at 8:00 p.m. (CEST).
The winner of the canceled election is no longer allowed
In the first round of the presidential election in November 2024, the right -wing extremist Kremlin friend Calin Georgescu surprisingly came to first place. However, the constitutional court declared the result invalid due to irregularities in campaign financing. The court also banned a new presidential candidacy Georgescus. The public prosecutor’s office has been investigating him since the end of February.
According to surveys, anyone who could come in second place in the first round is difficult to predict. Opportunities are awarded to the candidate of the social democratic bourgeois government coalition, Crin Antonescu, the conservative-liberal bucharest mayor Nicusor Dan and the former Social Democratic Prime Minister Victor Ponta.
The declared goal of the favorite Simion is to have “justice” for Georgescu in the event of his election victory. He did not rule out Georgescu to the office of Prime Minister. In Romania, the President determines the guidelines of foreign and security policy.
