The new government is supposed to start working for exactly half a year after the break in the traffic light coalition. But she still has to take a hurdle.
If everything goes according to plan, six months of political hanging game in Germany are over on Tuesday. Exactly half a year after the breakdown of the traffic light coalition, CDU boss Friedrich Merz is to be elected Chancellor and his cabinet sworn. The fifth black and red coalition then goes to work. So the week of change of power expires:
Monday: coalition agreement, SPD staff, tapping
– The Union named its ten ministers last Monday, the SPD does it on the last pusher. One name has already been determined: party leader Lars Klingbeil becomes Vice Chancellor and Minister of Finance. Six other items are to be awarded.
-Then the 144-page coalition agreement with the title “Responsibility for Germany” is signed after the CSU board, a small party congress of the CDU and the SPD members have approved.
– In the evening, the executive Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) is adopted by the Bundeswehr with a large tap.
Tuesday: Chancellor’s election and swearing in the cabinet
– Merz needs the approval of the majority of all members of the Bundestag in the Bundestag to become Chancellor. That is 316 votes. The Bundestag includes 328 Union and SPD politicians. Despite the thin cushion, the choice of Merz is considered pretty safe in the first ballot. In the past, the result in the chancellor election was usually below the number of coalition seats. But it can also run the other way around: in 1998 six MPs voted for Gerhard Schröder (SPD) when the red-green coalition had seats in the Bundestag.
– After his election, Merz receives the certificate of appointment from Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Bellevue Castle and is then sworn in in the Bundestag. This is followed by the appointment and swearing -in of his cabinet.
– In the afternoon, the first handover in the Chancellery and the Ministeries take place, possibly also the first cabinet meeting.
Wednesday: Chancellor to Paris and Warsaw
– If everything goes smoothly, the new Chancellor will visit France and Poland, the most important neighboring countries on his first full working day. The new CDU Secretary of State Johann WadePhul may be accompanied by him. In the EU it is eagerly waiting to see whether Germany is ready under Merz to take a leadership role in Europe after the radical change of course in US foreign policy under President Donald Trump.
Thursday: World War II commemoration
– 80 years after the end of the Second World War, the Bundestag commemorates the liberation of the National Socialist tyranny.
Friday: more inaugural trips
– Merz and WadePhul are likely to complete further trips abroad.
