There are only two days until the planned swearing -in of the cabinet, but the SPD continues to struggle for your staff list. A difficult question now seems to have been clarified.
After the long-standing Federal Minister of Labor Hubertus Heil, the way for the previous general secretary Matthias Miersch seems to be free on the mighty post of the SPD parliamentary group leader. According to the German Press Agency, the wing of the party should have already agreed that he should take over the chair of the 120 social democratic MPs. At first there was no confirmation from the party leadership. Miersch, like party leader Saskia Esken, belongs to the left wing, co-party leader Lars Klingbeil to the conservative Seeheimer Kreis.
Heil had previously stated that he was not available as the leader of the parliamentary group. “Such an office can only be successfully exercised in this government coalition and in these times if you have the express support of the party leadership,” he explained to the German press agency as reason. That is why, despite encouragement from many sides in the party, he decided against a candidacy.
Heil had previously explained that he would not belong to the cabinet again. This is due to the fact that with Klingbeil for the post of Vice Chancellor and Minister of Finance as well as Minister of Defense Boris Pistorius, two men from Lower Saxony are considered set. The regional proporz always plays an important role in the occupation of government posts. The 56-year-old Miersch is also a man from Lower Saxony.
