Who could follow Donald Trump in almost four years? The Republican has a few ideas. Or does he want a third term?
US President Donald Trump sees his vice JD Vance and Foreign Minister Marco Rubio as a potential successor for the leadership of the country. In an interview by the television station NBC, the Republican said when asked about his successor that it was still far too early to say that. At the same time, Trump followed that Vance did a great job and would therefore be at the top of the possible candidates. “He is a fantastic, brilliant guy.” But Rubio, for example, is also great. There are many great people in the Republican Party, Trump emphasized.
At the same time, the 78-year-old rejected only half-heartedly speculation that he could consider staying in office longer than in the constitution. Trump is already in his second term – and the 22nd amusement of the constitution stipulates that nobody can be elected to the US president more than twice. Nevertheless, Trump and his surroundings for a long time with a possible third term. The official Trump online shop now also sells caps with the inscription “Trump 2028”.
The fear of the taboo break
In the NBC interview, the US President once again said that many people wanted him to start again. “But as far as I know, that’s not allowed.” Trump also said: “This is not something I plan to do.” He planned four great years in office and then “handed over to someone, ideally to a great Republican who continues it”. He thinks four years are enough time “to do something really spectacular”. However, in view of his many other statements in recent months, it has been open in the past few months whether Trump is completely excluded at a possible third term.
Extremely high hurdles apply to a constitutional change in the United States. In this way, experts do not see a real way for Trump to extend his term. Democrats have been afraid for a long time that the Republican could try to interpret the constitution differently in order to stay in power longer. The legal world has already played through theories of how Trump could try. Trump has repeatedly exceeded borders in the past and broke with political norms.
