Presidential election in Romania: right -wing populist by far

As in the previous year, an extremely right candidate wins the first round of the presidential election in Romania. Whether he actually comes into office will decide on May 18.

In Romania, the extremely right -wing candidate George Simion won the first round of the presidential election at a large distance, but missed an absolute majority. The decision about the future president is therefore made in a runoff election on May 18. Simion is likely to compete against the second-placed Crin Antonescu in the first round, who is supported by the bourgeois-social democratic government coalition.

According to the central electoral office, Simion received around 40 percent of the votes cast, Antonescu 21 percent. The independent mayor Nicusor Dan came in third place with around 18 percent. So far, three quarters of the polling stations have been counted. “We wrote history together, we are approaching an excellent result,” said Simion in a speech spread on TV.

Presidential election of 2024 was canceled
