In a few days, Putin wants to celebrate victory in the Second World War with a military parade. For this, the weapons are supposed to be silent – but at the moment the most difficult fights are raging.
Regardless of the efforts to take a ceasefire in Ukraine, Russia continues the attacks against the neighboring country in high intensity. There were more than 200 battles during the day, the general staff in Kiev wrote in his evening report. The situation around the small town of Pokrowsk in the Donetsk area has therefore been massively worsened.
So far, the Ukrainian defenders have defended 70 attacks there. Another 12 attacks were still running, the general staff said. The information cannot be checked independently.
The Pokrowsk transport hub is considered strategically important in defense of Ukraine. The Russian troops are not only east, but also south and even southwest of the city. Attempts from a Russian breakthrough to the west to the neighboring industrial area of Dnipropetrovsk have so far been able to strike back the Ukrainians.
The United States has been trying to convey a ceasefire and peace negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv for months. The unconditional ceasefire for 30 days proposed by US President Donald Trump has rejected Kremlin boss Vladimir Putin – in contrast to the Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj.
Instead, he recently ordered a three -day break of fire around May 9th. On this day, Putin commits the 80th anniversary of the victory in World War II with a military parade in front of foreign state guests. Kyiv rejected this and asked for an extension to 30 days. A ceasefire only to keep keeping a military parade smoothly is cynical, said Selenskyj.
