The fate of Saskia Esken – the situation in the morning

A few more hours, then Germany has a new government. Before that, the SPD has to inform some personnel decisions. What else is important.

Love Readers,

Last Friday my colleague Mirjam Bittner Adopted at this point – now I can start the day with you in the next four weeks. In this sense: good morning from Seoul!

Who the Social Democrats choose

Let’s take a look at Germany directly, more precisely to Berlin. There the SPD Today announces which ministers she is putting for the new government. A total of 17 posts were advertised, ten of which occupied the coalition partner Union. The names were announced last week. In the event that you no longer have everyone ready, my colleague Lennard Worobic put together a photo gallery for you:

While the Union announced its posts, the question arose which comrades the SPD would send into the race. Admittedly, the party made it exciting. But as is mostly the case, she couldn’t keep close to the end. First of all, sipped that the previous party leader Lars Klingbeil as the new finance minister is traded. Now further candidates followed:

  • It is considered certain that Defense Minister Boris Pistorius keep his office becomes.
  • Development Minister Svenja Schulze could stay or from Reem Alabali-Radovan be replaced.
  • The former Bundestag president Bärbel Bas is as a minister for Work and social issues traded.
  • Stefanie Hubigpreviously Minister of Education in Rhineland-Palatinate, could Federal Minister of Justice become.
  • Carsten Schneiderto date Ost representative of the outgoing federal government, is a new one Environmental minister traded.
  • The deputy SPD parliamentary group leader Verena Hubertz should Minister of construction become.
  • Nathalie Pawlik could Integration officer become.
  • SPD general secretary Matthias Miersch Should the Parliamentary group take over.

Hubertus Heil waived on the chair at the SPD and will no longer fill in a ministerial post, it has been clear since yesterday. The only question left is on how to proceed for Saskia Esken. The Social Democrats hardly lose a word about the much criticized co-party leader-at least to the outside world. Internally, the politician is probably not particularly impressed. The SPD general secretary in Baden-Württemberg, Sascha Binder, recently explained, are not one of the four best SPD women.

Eask is currently only experiencing backing Lars Klingbeil. He described the debate about them as “shameful”. “This is a style that I don’t like in the SPD at all, where I always fought for that it doesn’t exist,” said Klingbeil of the “Bild am Sonntag” and added: “I do not think that in 2025 men judge what they can or not.”

Maybe we experience and Saskia Esken still a miracle today. Because it is also speculated whether Esken could not become a development minister. If this is not the case, she could apply again for the party chair. However, the comrades will only vote on this post in June. So Esken remains a grace period.

A good start to Monday and the new week wishes you

Congratulations, FC Bayern!

Admittedly, I’m not a fan, but when it comes to the German champion in the Bundesliga, I am also curious about the sports reports. Unsurprisingly, FC Bayern has now won – without having played themselves. (Small hint, if you are also only sporadically interested in football: Bayer Leverkusen Bundesliga best.) The season is not yet over, but Bavaria is no longer in the top of the table.

It is the 34th time that Bavaria takes first place in the Bundesliga. Actually a boring result, not just for die -hard football fans. But the victory is granted to the Munich, after all, the club is not going very well for the club, my colleague Christian Ewers writes. Neither in the DFB Cup nor in the Champions League was enough for the final. That is a problem, because: “The Munich -based company not only understand themselves as a national champion, but also as a European football power,” writes Christian. All eyes are therefore aimed at coach Vincent Kompany. Does he know what to do?

It was cheered on Saturday, even if the championship was not yet defeated: Bayern player Leroy Sané (left) and Kingsley Coman in the Freudentaumel

Opinion
Congratulations on the championship, FC Bayern. But not for this season

Rapper in court

Sean Combs, better known as P. Diddy, is one of the most successful rappers in the world. His songs “i’ll be Missing you” or “Bad Boy for Life” are international hits. In September 2023, the rapper was recognized as “Global Icon” at the MTV Video Music Awards.

And today? P. Diddy has a court appointment in New York. The 55-year-old is said to have sexually abused and forced women and men to take part in drug and sex parties. In addition, the investigators accuse him of deprivation of freedom, arson, bribery and disability of the judiciary. My colleague Hannes Roß researched the details of the allegations.

Combs are expected to appear personally at the start of the process. My colleagues report on site and from Hamburg. You can find the latest stand on the process in our star-Liveblog:
