The consequences of the classification of the AfD by the constitutional protection as “secured right -wing extremist” are not yet foreseeable. A MP in the Bundestag draws consequences.
After the new classification of the party by the Federal Constitutional Protection, the AfD loses a member of the Bundestag as a “secured right -wing extremist endeavor”. The Baden-Württemberg Sieghard Knodel, who was only newly moved into the Bundestag at the election in February, explained his exit from both the parliamentary group and the AfD.
A group spokesman confirmed a corresponding ZDF report. In an email, Knodel wrote, “given the classification of the party as secure right-wing extremist by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, I have to protect my private and business environment”.
He considered the step to be inevitable, even if he is very reluctant to go, the MP added. In the future, he will continue his Bundestag mandate as a parliamentary member. The AfD in the Bundestag is still 151 MPs. She had almost doubled the number of her seats in the election of 77 at the end of the last legislative period to 152.
