Universities: Trump government wants to deny Harvard new funding

In the dispute with American universities, the US government, under President Donald Trump of the Elite University Harvard, does not want to grant new funding. Minister of Education Linda McMahon informed Harvard President Alan Garber in a letter that she also published on platform X. The university should not receive any further federal subsidies as long as it did not prove a “responsible management”, a high -ranking representative of her ministry had previously declared. Research funds are initially affected.

As a reason, it was said that the university, based in Cambridge in the US state of Massachusetts, benefits massively from state support, but does not adhere to federal specifications-with almost non-taxed billion dollar assets. Among other things, Harvard failed in dealing with anti -Semitism.

There had been propalestinian demonstrations on Harvard’s campus and many other US universities last year. Critics accuse Trump of specifically using the anti-Semitism allegation in order to exert political pressure on unpleasant institutions.

Harvard defends himself legally

The US government is hard against universities, which it assumes a left-liberal orientation. In particular, there are sights on programs for promoting disadvantaged groups that should compensate for discrimination based on origin, gender or skin color. Trump rejects this as an expression of a “woken ideology”.

However, Harvard refuses – unlike other universities – far -reaching demands from Washington, such as admission procedures, rules of conduct and personnel decisions. After the university had rejected corresponding requirements, the government is already considering considerable funds: Trump put a total of $ 2.2 billion (around 1.9 billion euros) on several years of federal grants and around $ 60 million from current contracts with the university. According to the US media, government funding is at a total amount of around $ 9 billion.

Harvard defends himself legally against the procedure. The university sees a violation of the freedom of expression guaranteed in the first constitutional additive.

Finally, Trump also threatened that tax privileges could be withdrawn from the university – it should be treated like a political organization in the future.
