Miersch wants to hand in position as SPD general secretary

Matthias Miersch is scheduled to be SPD parliamentary group leader on Wednesday. What will become of his previous tasks in the party headquarters?

The designated SPD parliamentary group leader Matthias Miersch wants to give up his position as general secretary for the party. However, he will continue to perform the most important tasks in the Willy-Brandt-Haus “until my successor is regulated,” writes Miersch in a letter to the employees of the party headquarters, which is available to the German Press Agency. In it, the 56-year-old invites the employees to a meeting in the afternoon. “You deserve clarity how things are going on now,” he writes.

Miersch is to be elected SPD parliamentary group leader on Wednesday-after an agreement of the three major political currents of the faction with the designated Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil. “That fulfills me with great humility and deep respect,” said Miersch. Now it is about filling the social democratic handwriting of the coalition agreement with life and translating it into good, fair legislation.

The party leadership is to be elected at a party congress at the end of June. Klingbeil is expected to run again as chairman. The future of co-party leader Saskia Esken, on the other hand, is open.

After the withdrawal of Kevin Kühnert, Miersch was only temporarily chosen general secretary and not by a party congress. It is not yet known who should take over the office.
