The conclave runs strictly secret. The 133 cardinals of the outside world are still shown. But it will soon be over. There is a favorite for Francis’ successor – and many other candidates.
Shortly before the conclave for the election of the new Pope, the cardinals of the Catholic Church turned to the world with a peace appeal. They called on all warring parties in a wide variety of conflict regions to “achieve permanent ceasefire as soon as possible”. It was probably the last common speech by the dignitaries before the wires to the outside world are cut on Wednesday.
With the beginning of the compliance in the Sistine chapel in the afternoon, only to the outside world should penetrate whether the electoral ends were successful to succeed Pope Francis. All 133 cardinals that will decide are already in Rome. Only those who are under 80 years old may choose.
Fischerring and seal made unusable
In a last so -called general congregation, more than 170 cardinals came together – including those who are not allowed to be there due to exceeding the age limit in the conclave. The various candidates mentioned once again had the opportunity to comment internally. The previous number two of the Catholic Church State, Cardinal State Secretary Pietro Parolin, is currently the favorite. The 70-year-old also heads the conclave as the highest cardinal.
The farewell to Francis found his precipitation the day before the conclusion in another ritual act: in the presence of the cardinals, the fishing ring of the old Pope and its seal were made unusable. For this purpose, the surfaces of the metal objects were processed, as was shown on images of the Vatican. The fishing ring shows the Pope as the successor to the apostle Peter.
Cut off from the outside world
During the election, the churchmen are strictly isolated from the public. You have to hand in all smartphones and other electronic devices. You will spend the night in the guest house of the Vatican, the Casa Santa Marta, and an older extension. You must not have any contact there either. Only when the new Pope has been chosen and has been shown are they free again in their movement.
The first ballot takes place this Wednesday afternoon. However, nobody expects that the Sistine Chapel will rose white smoke afterwards. This is the sign that there is a new Pontifex – the 267th in two thousands of church history. In the recent past, most of the slaves lasted two or three days. The Pope is head of 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide.
Favorites and outsiders
The successor of Francis is considered open. In addition to slogan, two other Italians are considered promising candidates: the Archbishop of Bologna, Matteo Zuppi (69), and the patriarch of Jerusalem, Pierbattista Pizzaballa (60). If one of them prevails, it would be an Italian for the first time since 1978.
Other cardinals, whose names are given a lot, are the Philippiner Luis Antonio Tagle (67), the Frenchman Jean-Marc -veline (66), Portuguese José Tolentino de Mendonça (59), the Hungarian Peter Erdö (72), Fridolin Ambongo Besungu (65) from the Democratic Republic of Congo and Luxemburger Jean-Claude Hollerich (66). The list of possible new popes is getting longer and longer from day to day: there are now about two dozen names.
How the conclave works
The conclave takes place under the strictest confidentiality, isolated from the rest of the world. The name comes from the Latin “Cum Clave” – ”with the key”, in the sense of “enclosed”. It starts this Wednesday at 4.30 p.m. with the move in the cardinals into the Sistine chapel. Previously, a large fair takes place in St. Peter’s Basilica in the morning.
Disassers are supposed to prevent any communication between the shielded area of the Vatican, in which the cardinals are in place, and prevent the outside world. There is no television or radio or internet. When the chapel’s doors close behind them, the cardinals swear secrecy. Anyone who stays nearby for their care or for medical emergencies must also take off an oath.
When does the habemus papam come?
The election is made to set dates – after the first round on Wednesday twice in the morning, twice in the afternoon and until a candidate receives a two -thirds majority. After unsuccessful ballot, black smoke rises from the specially installed chimney, after the pope choice white. Then follows the Habemus Papam (we have a Pope): The new Pontifex steps on the balcony of the St. Peter’s Cathedral and shows the tens of thousands that are waiting for it on St. Peter’s Square – and also the rest of the world.
The Pope has the largest Christian faith community in the world. According to the Catholic teaching, he is the successor to the apostle Peter and deputy of Jesus Christ on earth. He is also Bishop of Rome, Primas of Italy and head of state of the Vatican. The Pope does not have great world power. But it is a moral authority for many people.
Francis became Benedict XVI in 2013 after the surprising resignation of his German predecessor. chosen after a day and a half, in the fifth ballot. In the twelve years of his pontificate, he kept talking to current questions. He did not shy away from criticism of powerful. He asked for more humanity in dealing with migrants, worried about nature or criticized Israel’s procedure in the Gaza War.
The Argentinian – with a bourgeois name Jorge Mario Bergoglio – waived many privileges and status symbols. He was 88 years old. Only another Pope got older. He was not buried in St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, but in the Marienkirche Santa Maria Maggiore near the main train station – his favorite church in Rome.
