Turkey is waiting for green light from Germany for the delivery of fighter jets. Friedrich Merz does not give that – and still sends clear words towards Ankara.
The new Chancellor Friedrich Merz is building close cooperation with Turkey in defense issues. He and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte combine “the permanent will to continue tying Turkey as a large member country of NATO,” said the CDU politician when he was inaugurated by NATO in Brussels.
Turkey protects a space in the NATO area, which cannot be assessed highly enough of its strategic relevance, Merz continued at a joint press conference with Rutte. “That is why Turkey is an extremely valuable, important NATO partner for us and I will do a lot and everything I can do in order to maintain this partnership within NATO with Turkey.”
Friedrich Merz wants to accept invitation Erdogans
He also wanted to accept an invitation from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the near future, said Merz. The federal government still has to decide whether a delivery of fighter planes will be released to Turkey.
Turkey wants 40 Eurofighter fight jets. Since Germany is involved in the European Community project, the fighter jets cannot be exported without the approval of the federal government.
