Merz, Macron and Strander arrived in Kyiv together
Friedrich Merz takes the next important journey of his young term. Together with Keir Strandmer and Emmanuel Macron, the Federal Chancellor went to Kiev.
The heads of state and government of Germany, France and Great Britain have arrived for a joint visit to Kiev. Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU), French President Emmanuel Macron and the British Prime Minister Keir Starmer arrived in the Ukrainian capital on Saturday morning. There they want to meet the Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj and the Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
They called for a 30-day ceasefire in the conflict and declared their willingness to support peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. US President Donald Trump had previously made this claim. It is now supported by the four Europeans.
Merz wants to commemorate war dead in Kyiv
“We confirm our support for President Trump’s demand for a peace agreement. Russia is asked to no longer hinder the efforts to make permanent peace,” it said in a joint explanation that they published on their way to Kiev.
In Kyiv, the four heads of state and government want to have talks with Selenskyj and commemorate the war dead. For Merz, it is already the fourth capital he visits for Merz on the fourth day in office to Paris, Warsaw and Brussels. He has set himself the goal that Germany assumes more international responsibility again. He always calls France, Poland and Great Britain as the most important partner in Europe.
Ukraine hopes for new arms deliveries
The Ukrainian ambassador in Germany, Oleksii Makeieev, expects Merz to promise new arms of Ukraine during his visit to Kiev. “I’m sure,” said the ambassador. The new federal government wants to keep German arms deliveries to Ukraine largely secret, as said on Friday evening from government circles. This primarily wants to “refuse military advantages to the aggressor in the Ukraine War”.
Makeieev confirmed that Ukraine was ready for such an ceasefire, in contrast to Russia. “We very much hope that we will get into these negotiations from the position of the strength.” He was confident that German-Ukrainian relations would be further expanded. “I feel that the German-Ukrainian partnership with the Federal Government, the new federal government is being raised to a whole new level.”
