Mexico is suing Google for “Golf of America”
The designation of the Golf of Mexico is a point of dispute between Mexico and the USA. Google Maps stands between the chairs – and now gets a lawsuit in the house.
If you are looking for the Gulf of Mexico on Google Maps, you will get an additional information. There has been “Gulf of Mexico (Golf of America”) since February. In the United States, users of the online card service are only shown the name “Gulf of America”.
The background is the renaming that US President Donald Trump has carried out by decree. Mexico wants to complain against the presentation on Google Maps. President Claudia Sheinbaum had already threatened legal steps – and apparently makes her threat. The Mexican government argues that Trump’s arrangement only applies to the coastal sea of the United States. However, the United States did not have the power of attorney to rename the entire Gulf.

“We just want the US government’s decree to be observed,” said Sheinbaum. She left open whether the lawsuit against Google in Mexico or in the USA should be submitted.
In January, the president had already appealed in a letter to the tech company to take back the renaming of the Golf of Mexico. “The name change can only refer to the twelve nautical miles off the coast of the United States,” said Sheinbaum at the time. In February, she threatened a lawsuit.
Google, on the other hand, kept that it was based on official government sources. Since the Gulf of Mexico was officially renamed the United States, this provision is followed. In Mexico, users are only displayed by the conventional names of sea bay. Both names are shown in other countries.
Trump may also want to rename the “Gold of Persia”
The Gulf of Mexico has had its name since the 16th century. Donald Trump had ordered the renaming immediately after taking office in January. However, he can only have this for the United States.
And the US President may not be at the end: Finally, Trump spoke about not wanting to describe the Persian Gulf. Instead, he brought the term “Arabic Golf” into play. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghtschi called the “insult to all Iranians”.
