Germans also meet new visa rules in Great Britain

To emigrate to Great Britain, will initially become more complicated for German citizens. The British government announces a number of changes in the visa allocation.

Great Britain massively tightens the immigration rules. This Monday, the British government presents a so -called “Immigration White Paper”, which is also relevant for German citizens. According to the government, Prime Minister Keir Strander wants to announce during a press conference that life in the UK is “a privilege” that you have to earn.

The “Care Worker Visa” for nursing professions introduced to combat the nursing status should therefore be abolished in this form. For the central working visa (“Skilled Worker Visa”), a university degree is to be required again. For professions that do not provide for this qualification, the residence permit should be severely limited in time. Employers should rely more on the qualification of British workers.

The deadline to apply for British citizenship should also increase in principle from five to ten years. According to the government, for those who can prove a “permanent contribution to the economy and society” – for example for nurses, doctors, engineers and AI executives. In addition, higher demands on the knowledge of the English language should apply.

Summit with the EU on May 19th

The background of the reform is the change of government in particular last year. The Strander will announce the “end of Great Britain’s failed experiment with open borders,” said the government. Immigration in Great Britain had increased massively after the Brexit 2020, contrary to the announcements of the governments at that time. In 2024, the net immigration was 728,000, as the PA news agency reported.

By leaving the European Union, the majority of immigrants no longer came from European countries – for EU citizens, entry became much more complicated. This also affects younger people who want to study or exchange exchange.

The freedoms of travel between the EU and Great Britain are to be discussed at a summit on May 19 in London. Both sides strive for a rapprochement in several areas, even in retail and militarily-but there will be no return to the pre-Brexit period.
