US President Donald Trump wants to lift the sanctions against Syria. Many Syrians have been waiting for such a decision for years. Now celebrate together on the streets.
In numerous cities in Syria, people celebrate the lifting of the US sanctions against the country on the street. Eyewitnesses reported that people had gathered in public places in the capital Damascus, in Homs and in other cities.
There were autocorsos. Flags were swung and slogans were sung together, residents reported in Damascus from the German Press Agency. “The lifting of the sanctions is a second victory over the former regime that Syria has led to ruin,” said a resident from Damascus.
Party also on the streets of Homs
Hundreds of people came together in the central Umayaden-Platz in the capital. “Everyone celebrates,” said a shopkeeper. The sanctions have only met the Syrian people, not the old rulers against whom they were originally directed, he said.
In Homs in the west of the country, too, citizens gathered in a central square. They shouted slogans like “Hold your head up – you are a free Syrian!”. One resident said: “We thank the kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Prince Mohammed bin Salman for their efforts.”
US President Donald Trump had previously announced in the Saudi capital Riyadh that he was resolving the sanctions against Syria. The lifting of the sanctions is seen in Syria as a signal for a possible economic fresh start.
Trump may meet on Wednesday with Syria’s temporary president Ahmed al-Sharaa in Riad, before he wants to continue to Doha.
