There was a large reform of the debt brake. But that shouldn’t be done. Finance Minister Klingbeil presses the pace for a coalition compromise.
Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil quickly wants to initiate a reform of the debt brake. He would “use an expert commission shortly, the proposals for this,” announced the SPD politician in the Bundestag. The modernization of the debt brake agreed in the coalition agreement should enable stable state finances and guarantee sustainable future investments – for a time when the 500 billion euro special pot has been decided.
In the coalition agreement, the Union and SPD agreed that “permanently additional investments in the strengthening of our country” should be made possible. A proposal for this should be available this year, and a law should also be passed before the end of the year, said Klingbeil.
Majority search in the Bundestag
However, a two -thirds majority in the Bundestag is necessary for a change in the Basic Law, which the Union and the SPD alone do not have. Klingbeil therefore announced that the necessary majorities are looking for in parliament. A reform with voices of the Greens and the left is conceivable. With the latter, the Union has excluded an incompatibility decision that excludes “coalitions and similar forms of cooperation”.
Die Linke made it clear in the Bundestag that they will only agree with a “real reform” of the debt brake. “We need investments that arrive: among the tenants who are overwhelmed by the next additional cost calculation, with nurses who are in pairs of the entire station, for single parents who rely on every cent,” said party leader Ines Schwerdtner. The Union would also have to make content of content.
