In climate protection, Germany should partially create its goals for the next few years. However, this is not just due to the efforts to save greenhouse gases.

According to experts, Germany should only partially observe its climate goals for 2030. However, without the crisis of the German economy, the balance would be different, as the chairman of the so-called expert council for climate issues, Hans-Martin Henning, said in Berlin.

Savings effects from corona and weak economy

“Without the buffer, who built up through Corona and the weak economy from 2021 to 2024, a significant budget exceeding would have been expected by the end of 2030,” said Henning. In the German Climate Protection Act it is stipulated how much greenhouse gases Germany can only emit between 2020 and 2030 per year. All annual quantities together result in the emission budget, which, according to the expert council, moves for the foreseeable future in the permitted framework.

However, Germany should not achieve the overarching goal of exposing at least 65 percent less greenhouse gases than in 1990 by 2030. By 2045, Germany wants to be climate -neutral, i.e. no more greenhouse gases than can be saved again. According to the experts, Germany will even miss this goal very clearly.

In the case of European goals, there is a risk

According to European -agreed requirements, Germany has to reduce its emissions by half by 2030 – but compared to 2005. Since last year, Germany has not been on track here, according to the expert council calculations. The goalkeeper until 2030 had grown compared to the previous year.

The expert council is an independent five -member body that checks the effectiveness of German climate protection policy and provides politics. His tasks are legally stipulated. In its report now presented, the committee essentially confirms the figures that the Federal Environment Agency presented in March.
