Belgium had already legally determined the nuclear phase -out in 2003. But the debate was not ended. Now Germany’s neighbor is making a U -turn.
The Belgian parliament voted with a large majority against the planned nuclear phase -out. 102 MPs voted for an extension of the duration of the existing reactors, 8 voted against it. There were 31 abstentions. Prime Minister Bart de Wever’s right -wing government is also planning to build new reactors.
Belgium currently has two nuclear power plants with seven reactors – however, three have already been removed from the network.
In Belgium, the nuclear phase -out in 2003 was stipulated by law. Originally, the other reactors of the two nuclear power plants in Doel near the city of Antwerp and Tiange 2025 were to be switched off. But the debate has been going on for years.
Belgium’s nuclear power plants ensure debates in Germany
In view of the concern for the safety of energy supply and with a view to the Russian attack war in Ukraine, Belgium’s government had decided in 2022 to postpone the nuclear phase -out by ten years. One kiln of the two Belgian nuclear power plants should remain on the network by 2035.
In Germany, the Belgian nuclear people from the 1970s and 80s repeatedly provide discussions. Defects were found several times in reactors in the neighboring country, such as ailing concrete parts. Among other things, the North Rhine-Westphalian city of Aachen and the federal government repeatedly demanded decommissioning in the past. The Tiange power plant is about 60 kilometers from Aachen.
Germany decided in 2002 the nuclear phase -out, in 2023 the last nuclear power plants were switched off.
