Foreign Minister Johann WadePhul wants to spend five percent of economic output for the Bundeswehr. How much would that be?
“Naiv” and “Beyond Gut und Evil”? Since Foreign Minister Johann WadePhul (CDU) publicly agreed to five percent of the economic output after a massive increase in defense expenditure, the number has been debated after a massive increase in defense spending.
The NATO target for defense expenditure currently provides annual expenditure of at least two percent of the gross domestic product (GDP). Trump now wants his five percent goal in June at the NATO summit in the Hague. According to a proposal by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, classic military spending of 3.5 percent of gross domestic product and 1.5 percent for infrastructure, which can also be used militarily. This could be investments in railway lines, tank -compatible bridges or extended ports.

225 million euros per year due for the Bundeswehr
According to Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU), each percentage point would currently mean more than an increase of 45 billion euros in defense spending. At five percent, expenditure of 225 billion euros per year would currently be necessary. This would be a huge effort – even if more expenses for militarily usable infrastructure also had a civilian benefit, for example in the armored expansion of bridges.
To classify: The total expenditure of the federal budget was around 466 billion euros last year. How such a sum should be achieved is completely unclear, since there is not even a budget for the current year due to the early Bundestag election. The year 2032 is possible as a possible period for the fulfillment of a new goal for defense spending. Secret services assume that Russia should be able to start another war in Europe at the latest in the next decade.
