Crash in the congress: There are headwinds for a controversial law with tax reliefs and cuts. And that doesn’t just come from the Democrats.
US President Donald Trump suffered a setback in his own warehouse in the struggle for a central tax and expenditure law. Five Republican MPs in the household committee of the House of Representatives joined the Democrats and initially prevented the fact that a draft for further advice would reach the plenary of the House of Representatives. The budgetary conservative deviators criticize that the project leads to a higher budget deficit and do not go far enough for the cuts of government spending.
It is not that for the legislative proposal, but a clear damper for Trump and the Republican party leadership – especially for the chairman of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson. The President is pushing for a rapid farewell in the congress. With the comprehensive package, he wants to implement central election promises. Among other things, it is planned to permanently extend tax relief from its first term. This should be counter -financed, among other things, by cuts in social benefits – which is due to the Democrats.
Before the vote, Trump called on his party colleagues on his Truth Social platform to stand behind the project. The Republicans would have to unite behind the “large, beautiful law”, he partly wrote in capital letters. No “important” is now needed.
The dispute over the law has been smoldering for days. At the beginning of the week there was therefore a more than 17-hour marathon session in the congress, at which several MPs temporarily showed their eyes. Recordings of this caused ridicule on social networks.
