Do cell phones belong in class? The matter is clear for the new Federal Minister of Education. However, the former Kiel department head knows that dealing with mobile phones in schools is a national matter.

Federal Education Minister Karin Prien has spoken out for a ban on private cell phone use in primary schools. “The study situation is becoming increasingly clear: too long screen times lead to poorer learning services, lower social skills and psychological problems,” the CDU politician told the newspapers of the Funke media group. “We have to deal with it very quickly and very intensively.”

Basically, dealing with mobile phones in schools is the matter of the federal states, but their attitude is clear, said Prien: “In primary school, private cell phone use should be prohibited. In secondary schools, age -appropriate rules should be found as possible.” The ministers of the federal states are currently working intensively. Prien was in the Bund Education Minister of Schleswig-Holstein until the change of government.

“Schools and most of the parents gratefully for uniform guidelines”

The federal government will support the process of the federal states by providing the scientific basis, she continued. “From my experience, it is about banishing private cell phone use largely, but age -appropriate from schools.” Experience shows that schools and most parents are grateful when there are clear, uniform requirements.

Mandatory language tests for all four year olds

Prien also announced nationwide mandatory language tests for all four -year -olds to better prepare children for school. First of all, you have to make parents stronger and then promote them in the daycare centers. The problem does not start in the daycare center, but in the parents’ house.

“But the following applies: no funding without diagnostics,” said Prien. “Where is it still at the vocabulary, where are there deficits in the knowledge of German? We want to introduce nationwide -mandatory diagnostic tests for all four -year and mandatory support for children with catching up to do.”

Billions of investments in daycare centers and schools

Specifically, language daycare centers are to be activated and daycare centers in social hotspots, supported around the schools in the starting chance program. This invests strongly in daycare construction and quality, said Prien, who is also Federal Family Minister. In the coming years, billions would be invested in daycare centers and schools. The money will largely come from the special fund for the infrastructure.
