She is the first woman at the cabinet table that has Jewish roots. This should also be reflected in her work as Minister of Education.
The new Minister of Education and Family Karin Prien (CDU) wants to make Jewish life visible in Germany and also bring in her Jewish family background. “It is a real problem when Jews are primarily seen as victims,” said the 59-year-old to the newspapers of the Funke media group. Of course you have to talk about anti -Semitism. “But I very much advertise that we are more concerned with how much Jewish culture, Jewish thinking, Jewish art have shaped our German identity and still shape today.”
Pries pointed out that the Jewish mother of the Social Democrat Gerhard Jahn, who became Minister of Justice under Willy Brandt in 1969, was murdered in Auschwitz in 1944. “And I am now the first woman at the cabinet table, whose family was persecuted and wiped out to considerably by the National Socialists. This connects me with many Jews. In this respect, I am a Jewish minister, even if I do not belong to any Jewish community and am not confessing religious.”
Prien has a number of Jewish ancestors. A great-grandmother was murdered in a extermination camp, another died in Theresienstadt, as Prien 2022, then Minister of Education, Science and Culture in Schleswig-Holstein, reported in an interview with the “Zeit-Magazin”. Her mother always advised her to make her Jewish roots public, she said at the time. “For them we lived in the land of the perpetrators.” Prien was born in Amsterdam and grew up in the Rhineland-Palatinate Neuwied.
