Politics and entertainment sometimes merged seamlessly at Trump. Now his government is considering a TV show in which immigrants compete for the American passport.
According to matching media reports, the US Department of Homeland Protection checks the participation in a possible reality TV show in which immigrants are supposed to compete for an accelerated naturalization. As reported, among other things, CNN, the “New York Times” and the “Wall Street Journal”, the ministry has a corresponding request from the producer Rob Worsoff. Ministry spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin said the concept was in an early test phase. A decision has not yet been made.
According to the reported, Worsoff had already presented the concept several times at the Ministry of Homeland Protection in recent years-even under the former US President Barack Obama.
TV show should not be a “‘tribute of Panem’ for immigrants”
The format therefore provides for competitions around American history, cultural peculiarities and civil society knowledge. Working title: “The American”. Worsoff-a Canadian immigrant who has already participated in other reality formats emphasized the “Wall Street Journal”, but it is not “the tribute of Panem ‘for immigrants”. According to him, the format is aimed at people who already have a place in the US immigration system and are considered suitable candidates for citizenship.
According to the “New York Times”, Ministry spokeswoman McLaghlin was benevolent about the concept: It was “celebrating what it means to be Americans and what privilege it is to have US citizenship,” she said. One is open to “unconventional suggestions”.
The Ministry, however, rejected a report by the British “Daily Mail”, according to which Homeland Protection Minister Kristi NoEM supports the project. Noem had neither approved nor submitted it to the exam, it said in a statement. The ministry receives hundreds of TV requests every year, all of which are subject to a standardized test procedure.
Minister because of staging in prison under criticism
Noem is at the forefront of the Ministry of Homeland Property like hardly any other member of the government for the tough course in US migration policy under President Donald Trump. Civil rights organizations accuse the government of violating fundamental principles with deportations – including a high -security prison in El Salvador. A visit by the minister in prison caused criticism: Noem posed in front of imprisoned people who were seen behind bars. Again and again she relies on such media-effective appearances-for example on horseback, in Cowboy-Montur, on the southern border with Mexico.
A state-accompanied competition show would fit into the political style of the Trump government, where politics and entertainment merges many times. Real estate entrepreneur Trump was once known through the reality show “The Apprentice” in the USA.
