The Portuguese choose a new parliament. But if the surveys are correct, everything should be largely the same. The incumbent goes into the race as a favorite.
A early parliamentary election began in Portugal in the morning. A good 10.8 million Portuguese are called to determine the distribution of the 230 seats in parliament in Lisbon. It has already been the third election since 2022.
The urn gang became necessary after the conservative minority government was surprisingly overthrown by Prime Minister Luís Montenegro after just a year in March by a vote of no confidence that he did. The trigger was opaque business of a family business of the 52-year-old.
According to surveys, Montenegros conservative Alianca Democrática (AD) should nevertheless expect growth up to 34 percent and thus become strongest strength again. The absolute majority of 116 parliamentary seats would be significantly missed as in 2024.
The Socialist Party (PS) must expect losses and the right -wing populist party Chega could, according to the surveys, maintain its result with around 19 percent from last year. Four strongest power is likely to be the conservative liberal iniciativa liberal (IL). If the surveys are confirmed, Montenegro, who has excluded cooperation with Chega, would probably have to form a minority government again.
The polling stations on the mainland close at 7:00 p.m. local time (8:00 p.m. CEST), but on the Azores further west only at 9:00 p.m. CEST. Subsequently, forecasts are published on the basis of post -selection surveys. With resilient projections due to the counted votes, it is only expected during the night.
