Proeuropean Nicusor Dan wins presidential election in Romania

It was a choice of direction. Now the pro -Europeans can breathe a sigh of relief in Romania – and the EU with you. The right -wing populist Simion was lost. He had wanted to make a Kremlin friend the head of government.

The pro -European politician Nicus Dan will be the new President of Romania. After counting the votes in just under 99 percent of the polling stations, he was unexpectedly ahead of right -wing populist George Simion, as was the result of the election authority in Bucharest.

The liberal conservative is around 54.1 percent, Simion is around 45.9 percent.

“We live in a time of hope. But please be patient for the coming time. It will be a difficult time that is necessary to bring the economy, this economy to balance in order to create the basics for a healthy society. Please be patient for this,” said Dan on election evening. “Let’s enjoy the evening and tomorrow’s day together and start the reconstruction of Romania,” he added.

Simion also declared himself the winner – contrary to the numbers

The inferior right populist Simion had declared himself the winner well before the end of the count and, contrary to the forecasts. “We are the clear winners of this choice. We claim this victory on behalf of the Romanian people,” said Simion in front of running TV cameras in front of his supporters in Bucharest.

Even before the elections, Simion had assumed the authorities’s attempts to make an election fraud without providing evidence. The news portal “G4Media.Ro”, citing unnamed sources at Simion’s party Aur, reported that there are plans to contest the election if your candidate is officially declared a loser.

Simion wanted to appoint Kremlfreund Georgescu as Prime Minister

On the election evening, Simion confirmed that he wanted to enforce the Kremlin friend Calin Georgescu as the new prime minister. Georgescu came first in November 2024 at the annuled presidential election. The Constitutional Court had canceled this election due to violent campaign methods and non -transparent financing and banned a new candidacy Georgescus. In his election campaign, Simion referred to his good relationships with the still popular Georgescu in Romania.
