In the first round of the election, the pro -European Rafal Trzaskowski and the national conservative Karol Nawrocki almost end up. In the runoff election, the voices of the right -wing extremists will count.
In the presidential election in Poland, the first round did not produce a clear winner. At night, the Liberal Conservative candidates Rafal Trzaskowski from Donald Tusk’s government camp saw the liberal conservative candidate Rafal Trzaskowski with 31.1 percent of the vote. Karol Nawrocki from the national conservative PIS therefore received 29.1 percent. Since neither of the two achieved the required absolute majority, a runoff election is necessary on June 1st.
Third was Slawomir Mentzen from the right -wing extremist Confederacja with 14.8 percent. The right -wing extremist Grzegorz Braun also landed in fourth place with 6.3 percent. According to forecast, the turnout was 66.8 percent. Calculations like in Germany are not common in Poland. The official end result is expected this evening at the earliest.
Hard election campaign awaited
The vote is considered a choice of direction for the EU and NATO country Poland. Commentators in Warsaw expect a tough argument between the ruling Liberal -Conservative Citizens’ platform (PO) and the PIS, the two largest parties that have dominated the country’s political life for 20 years. “The game for everything has just started. A tough struggle for every voice. These two weeks will decide on the future of our homeland,” wrote the pro -European Prime Minister Donald Tusk on X.
Tusk needs a victory of his candidate Trzaskowski to advance reform projects. The previous President Andrzej Duda, who comes from the ranks of the PIS, had slowed them down with his veto.
Almost 29 million eligible voters were invited to choose a successor for the Duda, who had an outstanding office. In view of the narrow race, it will be of great importance for whom the voters of the right -wing extremist mentate decide in the second round. The 38-year-old entrepreneur announced on the election evening that he wanted to help his followers to make the decision. However, he will not announce details on election evening, but “shortly”.
Trzaskowski said on the election evening: “I guarantee good cooperation with the government, because our country needs peace and no conflicts.” Nawrocki told supporters in his hometown Danzig that he wanted to prevent a party from receiving the power monopoly in Poland. “We are here and we will win.”
Head of state has an impact on foreign policy
In Poland, the President serves five years. The head of state has more powers than the Federal President in Germany. It not only represents the country to the outside world, but also has an impact on foreign policy, appoints the head of government and the cabinet and is the high -commander of the Polish forces in the event of war.
