Can Donald Trump change Vladimir Putin? And are there justice for the Yazidi victims of genocide from IS? What else is important today.
Love Readers,
After his business trip to the East Donald Trump on peace mission. The conversations between Ukraine and Russia failed last week. Now Trump wants to put pressure on Vladimir Putin on a phone call. Does that really work? The Kremlin chief has already made it clear that the only solution in the Ukraine conflict is the war. But Trump would not be Trump if he didn’t at least try.
What else can Trump do?
Donald Trump could not end the Ukraine War, as announced when taking office, within 24 hours. Nevertheless, he seems pretty sure that he can still force the parties to the conflict to a peace. “Nothing will happen until I meet Putin”had announced Trump last week. Then why just a phone call, Mr. President?
It has been the third time since Trump’s taking office that he and Vladimir Putin make calls. As a precaution, Washington has already announced sanctions if Moscow refused further peace talks.
The European allies of Ukraine – France, Great Britain and Germany – had already done this last week. It didn’t work. Perhaps it is because the Europeans threatened with sanctions before they even agreed on measures?
In any case, they have not yet continued. Sanctions continue to consider “If Russia is not seriously involved in a ceasefire and peace talks”it says from London. Great Britain had advised on Sunday with Germany, France, Italy and the USA. It was about whether and why an unconditional ceasefire is necessary and that Putin should take the required peace talks seriously.
You read it: Nothing new in the west like in the east.
Process for genocide of the Yazidis
Today, a process of genocide begins at the Higher Regional Court in Munich. A couple from Iraq, who is said to have enslaved and raped two Yazidi girls. It is not the first time that a German court deals with the atrocities on the Yazidis. In 2021, Jennifer W. was sentenced to a ten -year prison sentence in Munich. The woman had watched as a IS supporter in Iraq, like a Yazidian girl, chained in a courtyard.
About a million people belong to the group of Yazidis. Because of their language and culture, they are mainly assigned to the Kurds, to which many of them also include themselves. Mainly they settle in the border region between Iraq, Syria and Turkey. At the beginning of August 2014, the fighters of the Islamic State (IS) set up a massacre in the Yazidi villages in Northern Iraq. Men were killed, women and girls raped and enslaved, boys recruited as IS fighters. Until 2017, the IS killed 5000 Yazidis and deported 7,000 of them.
. Nadia Murad was 21 years old when her village was attacked. She wrote a book about this and received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2018. Also that star she described her experiences:
What still happens today
- The British Prime Minister Keir Strander receives EU Council President António Costa and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Doesn’t sound spectacular at first. In fact, it is that First EU Grand Britain summit since Brexit. In terms of content, it will be about trade relationships and peace in Europe.
- And the open in Rostock “Teddy bear clinic”. If you have children and whose plush toys need medical treatment, a trip to the Hanseatic city on the Baltic Sea is definitely worth it. First .
A good and hopefully healthy start of the new week wishes you
