US President Trump wants to make calls again with Kremlin chief Putin. So far, the Russian showed little willingness to give in towards a peaceful solution in Ukraine. On the contrary.
Immediately before US President Donald Trump’s planned phone call with Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin, Germany, the USA and other allies of Ukraine have increased the pressure on Russia. The heads of state and government from Great Britain, the USA, Germany, France and Italy “also discussed the application of sanctions (…) if Russia is not seriously involved in a ceasefire and peace talks,” said a spokeswoman for the British government at night.
According to the British news agency PA Chancellor Friedrich Merz, the British Premier Keir Strandmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, Trump and Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni took part in the conversation. Trump wants to call Putin again today (10 a.m. local time; 4 p.m. CEST) to talk about a ceasefire in the Ukraine war that has been raging for more than three years. The US President has declared the goal of ending the Russian attack war in Ukraine as quickly as possible.
After the conversation on Sunday evening, Macron wrote that Putin now had to show that he wanted peace by accepting the 30-day unconditional ceasefire supported by Trump and supported by Ukraine and Europe. The spokeswoman for the British government further announced that the allies of Ukraine had discussed the need for the conversation between Trump and Putin that the Kremlin chief had to take the peace talks seriously.
Trump also wants to speak to NATO member states
In conversation with Putin, Trump also plans to address trade questions. He then wants to speak to the Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj and representatives of the NATO member states. Ukraine defends itself with western support against the invasion, but was recently under pressure-also because the US government under Trump significantly reduced its military help for Kiev.
Under Trump’s predecessor Joe Biden had largely prevailed between Washington and Moscow for a long time. The Republican is now increasingly looking for the direct wire. Since taking office in January, Trump has been talking twice with Putin – most recently in mid -March.
Putin showed little on the efforts of the United States, so far the only concession was the sending of a delegation -less delegation to negotiate with a Ukrainian representation in Istanbul. The only concrete result of this meeting under Turkish mediation on Friday was the agreement for an early exchange of 1,000 prisoners of war. A precise time for this was not mentioned.
Talks on the edge of the inauguration of Leo XIV.
On Sunday, European and American politicians and Selenskyj had already exchanged themselves in order to explore possible opportunities to quickly end bloodshed. On the edge of the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV, Chancellor Friedrich Merz spoke to Selenskyj and to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Before that, he had met with the Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
After an audience with Pope Leo XIV. At her meeting, he informed the Americans about the “unrealistic conditions”, which the Russian delegation had given to the peace talks in Istanbul, the Ukrainian head of state reported on the X.
“I have confirmed that Ukraine wants to capture real diplomacy and underlined the importance of a complete and unconditional ceasefire,” wrote Selenskyj. At the meeting with Vance and Rubio, the need for new sanctions against Russia and the situation in the combat areas had also been discussed. “Pressure is needed against Russia until they are ready to end the war,” emphasized Selenskyj. “And of course we spoke about joint steps to a fair and permanent peace.”
Fights in Ukraine are ongoing
In the east of Ukraine, Russian and Ukrainian troops continued their bitter battles. There were around 70 attacks by Russian units by the evening, as the general staff in Kiev said in his management report. According to this information on 25 assault attacks, Russian units competed around the Pokrowsk focal point on the edge of the Donetsk region.
Several Russian attacks were also reported from the Novopawliwka area. Russian reports on new regional conquests in these areas have not been confirmed by the Ukrainian side or from an independent source.
