Sharper border controls: police will only hold out for a few weeks

Union warns
Police can only hold out stricter border controls for a few weeks

The stricter border controls introduced by Friedrich Merz are only feasible for the federal police because there are other things. The officials are still at the limit.

According to the police (GdP) union (GdP), the tightened border controls and rejections from asylum seekers are not long to last. “We can only do this because duties have been changed, the further training of the units is currently on ice and the reduction of overtime has currently been stopped,” said the Federal Police Chairman in the GdP, Andreas Roßkopf, the newspapers of the Funke Mediengruppe. “One thing is clear: The police can only maintain the intensive controls for a few weeks.” Well over 1,000 standby police officers have been in use in the border area for days.

Roßkopf made it clear that the police union was behind the efforts of politics to “reduce irregular migration to Germany with border controls by the federal police”. Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) had intensified border controls a few hours after taking office. At the same time, he ordered that asylum seekers can also be rejected at the border. According to the minister, the number of rejections rose by almost half within a week.

SPD politicians warns: border controls a risk for Europe

For the SPD interior expert Lars Castellucci, the German path also harbors. “However, asylum seekers, we take a risk that our European neighbors leave the joint course of the asylum reform in Europe and take on national measures,” Castellucci told Funke newspapers. In migration, however, Germany can “only be successful together with our neighbors”.

The inner expert of the Union in the Bundestag, Alexander Throm, replied, the border controls had an effect. “Germany is no longer the magnet for migration in Europe. Our European neighbors have hoped for such a more restrictive migration policy in Germany for many years,” said the CDU politician.
