The pro -European candidate decides the first round of the presidential election. But his conservative rival is right behind him – and can count on the right -wing extremists in the runoff election.
The liberal -conservative candidate Rafal Trzaskowski from Donald Tusk’s government camp won the first round of the presidential election in Poland with a very thin lead. However, he has to compete in a runoff against Karol Nawrocki from the national conservative PIS, which is close to him.
31.36 percent of the votes accounted for Trzaskowski, as the final result of the election commission shows. Nawrocki received 29.54 percent. The second round is scheduled for June 1st. Above all, it will be important to see the voters of the right -wing extremist candidates Slawomir Mentzen and Grzegorz Braun eliminated in the first round.
Both politicians booked high results: Mentzen landed in third place with 14.81 percent of the vote, the openly anti -Semitic brown finished fourth with 6.34 percent.
