Political scientist explained Zelensky’s call to urgently impose sanctions against Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is trying to position himself as a decisive leader, but on the issue of relations with Russia, he is still engaged in confrontation. This opinion was expressed by RT on Sunday, February 13, Professor of the Department of Comparative Political Science at RUDN University Yuri Pochta.

Thus, he commented on Zelensky’s statement about the need to introduce preventive sanctions against Russia as soon as possible in order to curb the aggressive intentions of the Kremlin.

Pochta added that Zelensky is trying to position himself as “a decisive leader who, in a critical situation, can and is able to make decisions.” However, according to the political scientist, Zelensky’s allies are talking about preparing sanctions, but they will be introduced if necessary.

At the same time, the President of Ukraine himself emphasizes that there are no signs of a possible “attack”, Post said.

“Moving away from the fundamental issue of implementing the Minsk agreements, he would like to continue to engage in confrontation with Russia,” the RT interlocutor emphasized.

Post drew attention to the fact that such behavior of Zelensky can be explained by the fact that he won the elections “with the idea of ending the war and overcoming the negative legacy [экс-президента Украины Петра] Poroshenko”, who advocated a forceful solution to the settlement of the situation in Donbass.

The day before, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba called Russia’s disconnection from SWIFT an “atomic bomb” for the economy. According to the diplomat, these measures will be very painful for Russia, “they will cause irreparable damage to the Russian economy.”

Prior to this, on February 10, the British Parliament approved amendments to the law on sanctions against Russia, which will allow introducing restrictive measures against a wider range of individuals and companies from the Russian Federation, which, according to the British side, destabilize the situation in Ukraine. On the same day, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov promised an adequate response to any unfriendly steps taken by Britain.

In the United States and EU countries, they have recently expressed concern about the alleged increase in Russia’s “aggressive actions” against Ukraine. Moscow has repeatedly denied such accusations, saying that it does not threaten anyone. As the Russian side emphasized, such accusations are used as a pretext to deploy as much NATO military equipment as possible near the borders of the Russian Federation.

On February 12, Lavrov, in an interview with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, said that the propaganda campaign launched by the United States and its allies about “Russian aggression” against Ukraine pursues provocative goals, thereby encouraging the authorities in Kiev to sabotage the Minsk agreements and harmful attempts to resolve the “Donbass problem” by force .
