Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin speak for more than two hours. When the heads of state hanging up, there is no end to the Ukraine war-but the conversation was “useful”.
US President Donald Trump has promised immediate negotiations on ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in the Vatican. Trump wrote on the Truth Social platform after a phone call to Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin that the talks should begin immediately – and the Pope offered the Vatican as a place of negotiation. However, he did not give any further details – for example, who should sit there at the table.
“The negotiations between Russia and Ukraine are immediately accepted,” Trump wrote and emphasized that he had informed the Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj and European partner accordingly. Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) then wrote on X that Europe and America “wanted to accompany Ukraine closely on the way to a ceasefire”. “Europe will increase the pressure on Moscow through sanctions”-this was agreed with the US President after his phone call with Putin.
Direct conversations between Russia and Ukraine had last been in Turkey on Friday – for the first time in three years. Ukrainian and Russian negotiators came together in Istanbul. Both sides agreed to exchange great prisoners, but the big throw did not succeed – also because Putin was missing at the meeting he proposed himself. There was no agreement on the subject of ceasefire.

Finally, Ukraine got on the defensive on several front sections-even after the US government has significantly reduced its military support for Ukraine under Trump.

The Republican emphasized that the entertainment was “very good”. “The tone and the spirit of the conversation were excellent. If that were not the case, I would rather say that now than later.”
Vladimir Putin calls the phone call “useful”
The Russian president also expressed a positive statement about the conversation and called it substantial and useful. Russia is ready to work on a memorandum with Ukraine, which would contain an armistice, Putin said. Moscow wants to end the fighting, but the most effective way to peace must be found. To do this, Kyiv and Moscow would have to compromise that meets all sides, said Putin. In his opinion, he did not say what these compromises should look like.
After the phone call with Putin, Trump taught the President of Finland, France and Ukraine as well as the Italian Prime Minister and the EU Commission President in addition to Federal Chancellor Merz. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen thanked the US President “for his tireless efforts for an armistice in Ukraine”. In a post on X, she wrote that it is important that the United States continued to be involved.
Meloni praises Pope for offerings
Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni wrote at X, the willingness of the Pope to accommodate the talks in the Vatican. “Italy is ready to contribute its part to make the contacts easier and to stand up for peace,” wrote Meloni.
According to Russian information, Trump and Putin agreed on a prisoner exchange between their two countries. Both sides therefore want nine imprisoned flashes, as Kremlberater Juri Uschakow said, according to the Russian agency Interfax. Despite political tensions, Washington and Moscow repeatedly exchange prisoners.
Personal meeting planned
According to Russian information, the two presidents also spoke about a personal meeting. Both sides “agree that such a meeting should be prepared well and comprehensively,” said Uschakow. So far there has been no time or place for such a reunion.
Trump also emphasized in his post at Truth Social that Russia wanted to trade with the United States “on a large scale”. Trump signaled approval, but emphasized that the war in Ukraine had to end. “There is an enormous opportunity for Russia to create jobs and prosperity to a large extent.” Russia’s economic potential is unlimited. At the same time, Ukraine can profit in its reconstruction
