The number of political crimes has increased again last year and thus reached the highest level since 2014. Experts raise the alarm.
The number of politically motivated crimes has risen rapidly against the background of the Gaza War and the Bundestag election. In 2024, the police authorities of the federal and state governments registered over 84,000 acts and thus a good 40 percent more than 2023, as the statistics of the Federal Criminal Police Office and the Interior Ministry published on Tuesday. This increased the sixth time in a row. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt sees the numbers another argument for a “security offensive”.
Politically motivated crimes at the highest level since 2014
“There are major reasons for this, among other things, there are significant increases in criminal offenses, especially in the theme contexts, elections and the Middle East conflict,” it says. However, there was growth in all areas, both in anti-Semitism (plus 20 percent) as well as for foreigners and xenophobia (34 or 29 percent). A quarter of the incidents were registered on the Internet. Through violence increased by 15 percent.
Half of the overall incidents are assigned to the right -wing extremist spectrum. Here the number also increased the most with almost fifty percent. Left -wing extremists were responsible for almost twelve percent. Due to “foreign” or religious ideology also increased.
The Gaza War after the Hamas robbery on Israel and the Bundestag election were identified as drivers for a variety of crimes. In connection with the election, the incidents rose particularly clearly: According to the statistics, the main goal was the Greens, just followed by the AfD.
A third of the acts of violence fall into the right -wing extremist spectrum
Differentiated according to the type of deeds, 37 percent make up the propagandaeles. This includes, for example, showing anti-constitutional symbols such as Nazi characters or forbidden extremist organizations. Here, too, the most acts come from the right -wing extremist camp. The second largest proportion (21 percent) make out property damage, followed by insults and sedition.
The acts of violence – mostly bodily harm – increased by 15 percent, with almost a third assigned to the right -wing extremist spectrum. Acts “from foreign ideology”, which moved in second place. Islamist attacks are still considered a great danger.
