After almost three months of blockade, Israel again allows relief goods deliveries in the Gaza Strip. The United Nations criticizes far too little.
The United Nations has the promise of Israel that 100 other trucks can drive in the Gaza Strip with relief goods. It is hoped that they will be handled today or at the latest on Wednesday, said the spokesman for the UN Nothilfebüro Ocha in Geneva, Jens Laerke.
After almost three months of blockade, Israel approved the first nine trucks on Monday. Five of them have already been handled. The distribution should begin today, said the spokesman. Baby food is on board. “There are babies there who need this to survive,” said Laerke. “If you don’t get this food, you are in mortal danger.”
During the fire break at the beginning of the year, up to 600 trucks drove with relief goods across the border to the Gaza Strip every day. The amount now allowed is a drop on the hot stone, said UN Nothilfekoordinator Tom Fletcher.
The UN and aid organizations warn of a famine in the sealed coastal strip; The appeals to Israel recently became more and more vehemently. Since the beginning of March, Israel had left no aid deliveries into the area, which was destroyed by a year and a half and a half.
The country accuses Islamist Hamas to resell the relief goods to finance their fighters and weapons. The approximately 2.2 million inhabitants of the Gaza Strip are almost exclusively dependent on the outside help.
