Syria: EU agreed to lift sanctions

According to diplomats
EU agreed to lift sanctions against Syria

More than five months after the dictator Assad’s fall in Syria, the European Union of the transition government is accommodating. The United States had also paused sanctions.

According to diplomats, the EU has agreed to lift all remaining economic sanctions against Syria. The ambassadors of the 27 EU member states had made an agreement on Tuesday, the AFP news agency from Brussels learned. The lifting of the sanctions is therefore to be officially announced at the meeting of the EU Foreign Minister during the day.

According to the information, the sanctions primarily concern the Syrian banking system, which has so far had no access to the international capital market. However, sanctions against members of the fallen government by ex-power holder Bashar al-Assad and weapon embargos should remain in force.

Syria’s government is trying to make a moderate image

The Islamist HTS militia cited by transition head of state Ahmed al-Schaara and allied groups had overthrew Assad after more than 13 years of civil war in December. The HTS is an earlier branch from Al Qaeda, but had long since removed from the terror network. Former jihadist Al-Schaara has been trying for a more moderate image since taking office.
