The United States and Syria have recently approached. US Secretary of State Rubio emphasizes how important this is for the country, but also warns of a possible collapse of the transitional government there.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio complains of great instability in Syria. According to the United States, the transitional government there is “perhaps weeks, not for many months, a possible collapse and a comprehensive civil war epic,” he said at a hearing in a committee of the US Senate. Rubio also spoke of a possible splitting of the country.
The minister argued that if there was an exchange between the Syrian transitional government and the USA, the country has a chance – otherwise not. Rubio also emphasized the impact of the situation in Syria on other countries. “If you look at the history of the region, the region will be unstable when Syria is unstable,” he warned.
Rubio commented on the committee before it became known from Brussels that the Foreign Minister of the EU countries decided to fully abolish economic sanctions against Syria. Last week the United States announced the lifting of all US sanctions against the country. US President Donald Trump met Syria’s temporary president Ahmed al-Sharaa on his Middle East trip in Saudi Arabia. A US president with a Syrian head of state had last existed 25 years ago.
Syria’s new leadership has been trying to approach the international community since the fall of long-term power holder Bashar al-Assad in early December. In the country there had recently been violent struggles between members of the Drusian minority and Sunni militias. Already in March there were denominational battles between government troops of the new rulers and Assad-loyal militias in the western coastal region of Syria.
