Ukraine with massive western support has already defended itself against a Russian invasion for over three years. Now Kyiv wants even higher financial aids from the EU and also has a reason for this.
The Ukrainian Finance Minister Serhij Martschenko has proposed a direct financing of the Ukrainian army by EU countries to further defend the Russian invasion, which has been going on since 2022. “Today, the Ukrainian army not only guarantees the protection of Ukraine, but all of Europe,” said Martschenko the proposal according to a government announcement at Telegram.
The expenses for the Ukrainian armed forces would only make up a small part of the EU’s economic output. In addition, these defense spending could be counted towards the mandatory expenditure of the states in NATO, he suggested.
Further support even when the peace is closed
The Ukrainian military should also be financed from abroad even after a peace conclusion. “Even if a permanent peace is achieved, the key risk of European security remains on the part of Russia,” emphasized the minister. The support of Ukraine is therefore an investment in the stability of Europe.
In the Ukrainian budget for 2025, the equivalent of almost 25 billion euros is planned for defense. Member of the parliament, however, complains that the real expenses at the end of the year will be much higher. Foreign donors, including the European Union, Germany and other EU countries, are already financing more than half of the Ukrainian state budget.
Ex-chief commander is based on high-tech war
At the same time, the ex-commander and current Ukrainian ambassador in Great Britain, Walerij Saluschnyj, had hopes for an early end of the war. “I hope that there are no people in this hall who hope for some miracle, a white swan who brings peace and the borders of 1991 or 2022,” said the general at an arms conference according to the speech. Russia still has enough resources and soldiers and will therefore continue to attack. “This is a real war of wear,” said Saluschnyj.
Kiev could only force Russia to end through the “destruction of the armaments potential”. In view of the lack of Ukrainian soldiers and the “catastrophic economic situation”, this is only possible through a high technology war. The economic burden must be made intolerable for Russia and its allies. In addition, unrest at the opponent must be fueled in order to disturb his scientific and technical development and start decay processes. Moscow, however, follows exactly the same strategy in relation to Ukraine.
