After the sobering conversation between Trump and Putin, Chancellor Merz continues to seek a ceasefire in Ukraine. He hopes for help from the Far East.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) promoted Chinese President Xi Jinping to support the international efforts to support an ceasefire in the Russian attack war against Ukraine. This was announced by government spokesman Stefan Kornelius after the first phone call of the two since the Chancellor took office two and a half weeks ago.
China is considered the most important ally of Russia. The efforts of the United States and the Europeans for a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine have so far been unsuccessful.
Merz and XI had underlined their willingness to work together in partnership when coping with global challenges, Kornelius said. The economic relationships between the two countries were also an issue. The Chancellor emphasized the importance of fair competition. Merz and XI would have agreed to “continue their direct exchange soon to further develop German-Chinese cooperation”.
XI emphasizes the importance of mutual relationships
The Chinese side only briefly mentioned the topic of Ukraine in its statement on the exchange. It was emphasized more clearly how important mutual relationships are. XI said that the international situation was increasingly shaped by the disorder and changes. The strategic and global importance of relationships between China and Germany as well as between China and Europe would now become even clearer.
China is ready to open a new chapter in the comprehensive strategic partnership together with Germany. Political trust must be strengthened and the resistance of bilateral relationships increased. China views Germany as a partner and is happy about its development and prosperity.
